Sell your motorcycle or car on consignment

Selling on consignment means we sell your motorcycle or car for you, while you stay the owner until the moment it is sold. You drop the vehicle off once. We clean it, photograph it, list it on our website and on the major sales platforms, and handle every question, viewing and test drive. That way you never have strangers at your door. Once it is sold we take care of the paperwork and the RDW transfer, and you receive the sale price minus the agreed commission.

Selling it yourself, selling to us, or consignment

There are three ways to part with your motorcycle or car. What mainly differs is how much you keep in the end and how much work you do yourself.

Selling it yourself on Marktplaats

Proceeds
Usually the highest. You keep the full sale price, but you set the asking price and do the negotiating yourself.
Time and effort
You take the photos, write the listing, answer the messages and receive viewers at your home. Count on a number of evenings and weekends.
Certainty
You do not know in advance when or for how much you will sell. You arrange payment and transfer yourself, with a buyer you do not know.
When is this the best choice
You have time, you enjoy selling it yourself and you do not mind strangers coming to your home.

Selling directly to us

Proceeds
The lowest. We buy your vehicle outright, with our margin and the risk we take over already deducted.
Time and effort
One appointment. We look at the vehicle, make an offer, and if you accept it is all settled the same day.
Certainty
The highest. You know immediately what you get and when it lands in your account.
When is this the best choice
You want it gone quickly, or the difference in proceeds is too small to wait for.

On consignment through us

Proceeds
In between. You sell at the market price and pay tiered commission, from 10% down to 5%, plus €60 advertising costs per month for a car and €35 for a motorcycle.
Time and effort
One drop-off. After that we handle the cleaning, the photos, the listings, the questions, the viewings and the paperwork.
Certainty
We agree the floor price with you up front, the moment of sale is not fixed. If it does not sell, you take your vehicle back.
When is this the best choice
You want the higher sale price without the hassle, and you can wait a few weeks.

When consignment is not worth it

Consignment is not always the best choice. If the bottom line is only a few hundred euros above our direct offer, the waiting and the paperwork usually do not outweigh it and you are better off taking the certainty. As a rule of thumb: below roughly €500 net difference most people go for a direct sale, above roughly €1,000 consignment starts to pay for itself. It stays a rule of thumb and not a guarantee, because it depends on the vehicle and on how quickly it sells. At the intake we work out both options for you.

For comparison: Dutch dealers usually charge 4% to 15% commission for consignment, often with a minimum of €400 to €1,500. With us the percentage drops as the sale price rises, and you pay no setup or photography fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is consignment?

Consignment means we sell your vehicle on your behalf. You remain the owner until the sale is completed. We handle everything, from listing and showing to negotiating and transferring ownership.

How long does a consignment sale take on average?

Most vehicles sell within 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the type, condition, and asking price. We'll keep you updated throughout the process.

Can I set a minimum sale price?

Yes. We agree on an asking price and a minimum acceptable price together before listing. We will never sell below your minimum without your approval.

What happens if my vehicle does not sell?

If your vehicle hasn't sold after the agreed period, we discuss a price adjustment or you pick up your vehicle free of charge. You only pay the advertising costs for the months elapsed.

Am I still the owner while my vehicle is with you?

Yes. You remain the legal owner at all times. Motodam acts solely as an intermediary. Ownership only transfers to the buyer upon completion of the sale.

What costs are involved?

We take vehicles on consignment from an expected sale price of €5,000. You pay commission per bracket of the sale price: 10% on the first €10,000, 9% from €10,000 to €25,000, 8% from €25,000 to €50,000, 7.5% from €50,000 to €100,000, 5% above that. In addition, a monthly advertising contribution of €60 for cars and €35 for motorcycles applies. All prices excl. VAT, no setup, photography or hidden costs.

Can I take my vehicle back before it sells?

Yes. You stay the owner, so you can collect your vehicle before it is sold. The consignment agreement has a notice period of 14 days, after which you pick the vehicle up within a week. You then only pay the advertising costs for the months it was listed with us.

Who sets the asking price?

We agree on it together. We look at what comparable vehicles fetch in the Netherlands and what the condition, mileage and history of your vehicle add to that, and we advise an asking price. You decide. We also record a minimum price: we never sell below it without your approval.

When do I get my money?

We only hand over the vehicle once the buyer has paid in full. Within 14 days of delivery you receive a written settlement and we transfer the balance to your account: the sale price minus the commission and the agreed costs.

What should I bring to the intake?

The registration certificate, all keys and the maintenance history, so the service book and any invoices you have. Also bring the accessories that belong with the vehicle, such as a second key, panniers or an extra set of tyres. The more complete the package, the easier it sells.

Which platforms will my vehicle appear on?

On our own website and on the major Dutch sales platforms, including Marktplaats, AutoScout24, Gaspedaal, AutoTrack and Motoroccasion. We also share your vehicle on our social media. You pay one fixed amount per month for this, no matter how many channels it runs on.

How do viewings and test drives work?

We handle them at our location and always by appointment, so you never have strangers at your door. For a test drive we check the driving licence and have a test-drive form signed. The kilometres added in the process are part of selling the vehicle.

Do I have to keep the vehicle insured while it is with you?

Yes. The consignment agreement states that you keep the vehicle insured for the full term, third party as a minimum, and we recommend fully comprehensive. Tell your insurer in writing that the vehicle is with a dealer for sale. We store it in our locked showroom and keep the keys locked away.

Do I keep paying road tax during the consignment?

Yes. The registration stays in your name until the sale is complete, so road tax keeps running and the registration cannot be suspended during that period. That is part of the arrangement: you stay the owner, and the registration only transfers on sale.

When do I get the vrijwaringsbewijs and my money?

On sale we arrange the re-registration and indemnification with the RDW straight away and send you the vrijwaringsbewijs. From that moment you no longer pay road tax or insurance for that vehicle. Within 14 days of delivery you receive a written settlement and we transfer the amount, that is the sale price minus the commission and the agreed costs.
